Creations in progress
There she is, a pile of wood. You might not tell that this is the work of one day and that these are 3 almost complete XL dogfeeders.
A lot goes into making products from recycled materials. It starts with an idea and pretty soon after that looking at inventory. Is there everything there that I need to realize the plans in my head? Over the years I’ve accumulated quite a collection of mostly pallet and scaffolding wood, so chances are I’ll find what I need. And if not, I modify the “drawing” in my head a bit. Just because I can! Working with what is there greatly challenges your creative abilities. And when the creation has become what was intended (or better), it is so satisfying!
I rarely make a sketch on paper anymore. So for these 3 XL pieces of dogfeeders it is mainly fitting, measuring, sawing, gluing, sanding, sometimes some restoration work and measuring again. Then I consider that I really want to use that old scaffolding board with ‘character’ and that piece of pallet wood with the beautiful pattern and knots. The combination of different types of wood, textures and colors in one item gives a unique piece of feeding furniture every time, which keeps them fun to make.
Dogfeeders
Tomorrow I’m putting the 3 XL dogfeeders together with glue, nails and screws. It has to be solid furniture that can endure. Then it’s time for varnishing. This easily takes another day or two, because the layers of coating must of course dry properly and sanding is required in between. At the request of a customer, one item is being made suitable for outdoor use. Boat varnish is the solution for this. This varnish even has to dry for a week, but then gives excellent protection against weather influences. Ideal if you have a kennel in the garden, for example! So you can see what a lot of work goes on ‘behind the scenes’ to achieve those cool creations in the webshop. Feel free to take a look there.
